Glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate are among the most studied joint-support supplements, particularly for osteoarthritis. Clinical trials show they can provide modest improvements in joint pain and function, especially in knee osteoarthritis, with glucosamine sulfate having stronger evidence than other forms. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) has also demonstrated reductions in pain and improved mobility in several randomized studies, likely due to its anti-inflammatory effects. Boswellia serrata (frankincense extract) shows consistent evidence for reducing joint pain and stiffness by inhibiting inflammatory pathways (such as 5-LOX). Curcuma longa (turmeric, specifically its active compound curcumin) has been widely studied and shown to reduce inflammation and pain in arthritis, with some trials suggesting effects comparable to NSAIDs for symptom relief.
Quercetin supports joint function primarily through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. By helping to reduce oxidative stress and modulate inflammatory pathways, quercetin may assist in maintaining joint comfort and mobility. It has been shown to support healthy cartilage cells (chondrocytes) and may help protect joint tissues from degradation caused by inflammation, contributing to overall joint resilience and function over time.
Methionine contributes to joint health by supporting the formation and maintenance of connective tissues, including cartilage. As a sulfur-containing amino acid, methionine plays a role in producing compounds essential for cartilage structure and repair. It also supports the synthesis of proteins and antioxidants like glutathione, which help protect joint tissues from oxidative damage. Through its role in methylation and tissue maintenance, methionine helps support normal joint integrity and function.
Bromelain has clinical evidence supporting its use in reducing inflammation, swelling, and pain—particularly after surgery or injury—by modulating inflammatory mediators.
